Belgium beat the US by 2-1 in overtime and ensured a place in the quarterfinals of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil. The match took place this Tuesday (1 July) in front of 51,227 fans in attendance at the Fonte Nova Arena (its largest crowd in the World Cup). With the result, the Europeans now face Argentina in the quarterfinals. The match takes place this Saturday (5 July) at the Mané Garrincha National Stadium, in Brasília.
Thrilling to the last second, the match had two protagonists: goalkeeper Howard, whose stellar saves earned him the title of man of the match, and striker Lukaku, who came off the bench to change the fate of the day.
The Belgians pushed hard during the 90 minutes of regulation time, but Howard's awe-inspiring performance took the duel into overtime. In total, Belgium delivered an impressive 38 shots on goal, against 14 from the Yankees. After finally managing to overpower Howard and score two goals on the US, the Red Devils were rewarded with an amazing reaction by the North Americans, who decreased the difference in the second half of overtime and blasted an all-out attack against Belgium until the very last seconds of the match. In the end, both teams left the stadium to (well-deserved) standing ovations from the fans.
