German Chancellor Angela Markel attended the Fonte Nova Arena in Salvador this Monday (16 June) to watch Germany beat Portugal by a whopping 4-0. After a working meeting with President Dilma Rousseff in Brasília, Merkel traveled to Bahia and celebrated the 4 goals by Hummels and Thomas Müller.

Merkel watched the game from the VIP box. She was accompanied by Brazil’s Minister of Sport Aldo Rebelo, the governor of the state of Bahia, Jaques Wagner, the First Lady of the state Fátima Mendonça and FIFA President Joseph Blatter. The German Chancellor also had the chance to visit the city’s Monastery of Saint Benedict, where she watched a presentation by the Bahia State Program of Youth and Child Orchestras (Neojiba).
Before departing for the Fonte Nova, Angela Merkel visited the “Football Festival” social project. Developed in the Boca do Rio region, the project helps 200 low-income children and adolescents and receives support from the German government.
