Hospitality in Rio approved by 97% of foreign tourists

Survey commissioned by the state government found that 98.3% of foreign visitors would recommend the city as a destination to relatives and friends

The hospitality of the carioca locals was approved by 97.1% of the foreign tourists who passed through Rio de Janeiro during the World Cup so far. The numbers come from a survey conducted by company GRM Inteligência de Mercado and commissioned by the Rio Secretariat of Tourism (Riotur). The preliminary results were disclosed this Friday (11 July).

According to the survey, 98.8% of the foreign tourists had their expectations met or exceeded during their stay in the Rio for the World Cup, and 98.3% would recommend the city as a destination to relatives and friends. Overall, 97.1% of respondents approved the hospitality of the locals, a rate considered excellent.

Brazilian tourists who passed by Rio during this period also had a good impression of the city and its residents. The survey showed that 98.4% had their expectations with the trip met or exceeded, 98.2% would recommend a visit to Rio and 96% rated as true the fame of Rio locals as a hospitable people.

In the assessment made by the respondents of Rio's services, the item 'tourist information' received 89% positive reviews from the foreigners who came to the city. For tourist signage, the approval rate reached 82.6%, while public safety and cleanliness were considered excellent or good by about 76% of the tourists. Brazilian visitors also gave positive marks to services: Public Safety received positive assessments by 84.7% of respondents; cleanliness, 83.1%;  tourist information, 80.2%; and tourist signage, 78.2%.

The survey revealed that the majority of foreign tourists stayed at hotels (60.5%), while others rented a house or apartment (10.5%) or stayed at hostels (9.2%). Domestic tourists prioritized staying with relatives as an accommodation option (40.1%) followed by hotels (with 33.6%).

The Secretary of Tourism of Rio de Janeiro city, Antonio Pedro Figueira de Mello, said that the assessments are an encouragement for the municipality to promote an unforgettable celebration this Sunday (13) for the World Cup final match at the Maracanã. “We've had six matches in the city, and are now preparing for the closure of this mega event which will be watched by billions of people around the world. The focus in this final stretch is to ensure everything is perfect in this enormous spectacle that Rio will have the honour of hosting”.

Riotur will present the full results of the survey next week, which will include, among other data, average spending, length of stay, origin and household income of respondents. The survey was conducted throughout the World Cup at the Maracanã (on match days) and also at the FIFA Fan Fest in Copacabana beach.
