Home team bids farewell to World Cup in fourth place

The Netherlands authoritatively conquered Brazil by 3-0 this Saturday (12 July) at the Mané Garrincha National Stadium in Brasilia, securing third place in the FIFA World Cup 2014.

Brazil ended the World Cup in fourth place. Overall, the home team conceded 14 goals in seven matches, ten of which in the last two alone. It has been the worst performance by a Brazilian defence in the history of the Seleção at the World Cup. The attack scored 11 times overall. At the end of the day, only Croatia, Cameroon and Colombia were defeated on the pitch. There were two draws against Mexico and Chile (the latter won on penalties) and overwhelming defeats in the semi-final against Germany and the third place match against the Netherlands. The Dutch ended their World Cup campaign undefeated, since their only loss to Argentina in the semi-finals came in penalties.

The first Dutch goal came at the very second minute, in a penalty converted by Van Persie. The second was scored by Blind, taking advantage of a fumble by David Luiz at the 16th minute. Wijnaldum added a third in stoppage time of the second half.

The World Cup final match will be played this Sunday, with Germany and Argentina clashing at the Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro.
